It’s been a busy time for me since I last posted; job changes were the biggest affecting my daily life, but also had death in the family as well. I’m almost glad we didn’t have the harsh winter many were predicting based on last year’s mild summer, that would have made everything more gloomy.
But enough of that; today and the days forward are looking up – the mild winter has progressed into an early summer (Which again, many are now predicting a scorcher this year) and I’m ready to move forward.
My new job has given me increased responsibilities, and while challenging, I am happy to be trusted to do those things.
As for politics, let’s just say that I’m all for everyone having the opportunity to PAY THEIR OWN WAY in life. You wouldn’t (Or maybe you would…lol) knock on your neighbor’s door and force them to pay for your kid’s school lunch, a friend’s ambulance ride to the hospital, or anything else. Yet, many will gladly vote for politicians that will in essence do the same thing via tax fiat. /soapbox
About a year ago I took another close look at the family finances and decided to act; I was really frustrated with bank savings yields that in the past were paying 5-7% and right around 2008 took a massive nose dive to about where we still are now – pretty much 0% I found information that has helped me get out of the crappy stock investments I was in and find dividend paying companies, as well as REAL diversification. I realize now how much I didn’t know about investing, which turned into a good thing as I’m learning it.
I arrived at my new job in May of 2011 and I quickly learned I didn’t ask the right questions during the interview process; large manufacturing company with a private Class C /24 network at over 95% DHCP utilization. With no immediate plans to expand the IP address space, either through hardware or anything else. All the HP switches were basically in “plug/pray” mode with no configs, at all, and no redundancy in the connections. Hmm…. this is going to take a bit; FFWD to today and we’re about 80-85% utilization on DHCP thanks to getting a guest wireless network set up and modifying the DHCP lease time (Thanks Jon!) on the corporate network. We are expanding the IP address space in our existing SonicWall gateway/router (I just need to understand and implement the OSPF settings to get the subnets to talk nicely to each other) and will add a new DHCP scope for a dedicated corporate wireless subnet. And the hits keep on rolling………….
I recently racked an R710 I spec’d out for a standalone ESXi host (No $ for V-Sphere and associated SAN) and installed ESXi 4.1U1 and P2V’d one of our “test” servers, an application server running on (Windows) 2008 Std x86 running SonicWall Viewpoint (I also ask why?) and within the next year, we should be at ~90% virtualized for servers. Maybe then would be a good time to revisit the $$ issue with V-Sphere and a SAN……
